Your new favorite “nightcap” :: Golden Milk

Sometimes, even the best of relationships benefit from taking a break. “P.N.” and I hadn’t been getting along, and I felt the need to create some space. We’re still friends though – in fact, we spent some time together last weekend.  Continue Reading →

Chipotle Mary {Blog “Potluck”}

chipotle mary with text

Welcome to my first-ever blog potluck! Here’s how it works: the uber-talented chef Robin Asbell has invited a couple of blogging friends to post a recipe from her cookbook “Juice It.” We are each posting a different concoction, and giving readers a chance to win a copy of the cookbook. More on that later, but first, let’s talk about the perfect beverage for a Sunday brunch. Continue Reading →

Eating great food with great friends always makes for a terrific evening, but when you add a totally new experience to the mix, it becomes an adventure! That was certainly the case when our friend Cynthia invited some friends to join her at the recent Pop-Up Dinner in White.

Never heard of it? I hadn’t either, but it’s a wonderful concept! The dinner organizers secure a secret location and provide tables, chairs and a band. That’s it. Attendees bring in everything else needed to enjoy a gourmet dinner under the stars.

The caveat? It’s an all-white event… our clothes, the table linens, plates and flowers were all to be white. Continue Reading →

Ice, Ice Baby! {Amp up your summer beverages!}

flavored ice cubes

Summer means outdoor entertaining {finally!}.  I, for one, love to enjoy a tasty beverage on the deck – but too often it gets diluted from melting ice.  Add a little “zip” to your beverages with flavored ice cubes.

I’ve just experimented with a few combos today – but this is where you {and your kids} can have lots of fun.

{Make Your Own} Almond Milk

almond milk - draining with title

Don’t worry, I’m not going all Euell Gibbons on you.  (What, you’re too young for that reference?  Lucky you… !)

Anyway, if you listen to the “experts” you’ll hear that dairy is good, then… dairy is bad!  Soy is good, soy is bad!  Who can keep up?!

(Thankfully, there seems to be pretty consistent praise for red wine and dark chocolate – in moderation of course.  But I digress… again.)

Dairy and voice-over work don’t go well together — at least for me.  So lately, I’ve been using almond milk instead of dairy or soy.

I love it, and use it in anything that calls for regular milk.  But one look at ingredient list on the package and I quickly run out of words I can pronounce.  I had heard how easy (and economical and “green”) it is to make your own without all the additives and preservatives.  I’m always up for a fun food experiment!

Let the cleanse begin!

cleansing broth ingredients

We’ve put it off as long as we could… that post-holidays, post-vacation resolution to shock the system back to healthier habits.

Last year, Husband and I did the 2-week, Bon Appetit Food Lovers’ Cleanse.  It was great — a LOT of work, but we found some new favorite dishes, which we continue to make.  We were never hungry – much to our surprise.

This year, we’re trying the Whole Living Action Plan, a 3-week program that detoxes your organs, by eliminating all the naughty stuff (dang!) and starting with a simple base of lentils, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds.  If we survive that, we get to add in fish and gluten-free grains.

Let me say right up front, there WILL be some modifications to this plan… Continue Reading →
