Larder Love

Pantry

If I could move a cot into my pantry and live, I just might. It’s my favorite part of our kitchen remodel — and the part I probably spent the most time on. Planning. And measuring. And redesigning.

When we started the project, Husband said that he didn’t really like things out on the kitchen counters. Given I had a juicer, an espresso machine and my new Vitamix always at the ready, this was going to take some creative problem-solving. Continue Reading →

Grateful for dim light and an illegible font…

Julie Child - Sign for Julia dish

This past August marked what would have been Julia Child’s 100th birthday.

We had just finished our kitchen remodel, and the local distributor for Wolf and SubZero appliances (both, in which, we made rather large investments) was having a party at their showroom.

I thought it would be fun: small plates inspired by Julia, prepared by local women chefs and paired with delicious wines. What’s not to love? Who cared that we wouldn’t know a soul that would be there? Continue Reading →

Super easy and healthy(er!) potato chips…

So these happened today!

If you had told me that I could have fabulous, crunchy, salty chips without frying them… and from the MICROWAVE no less… I would have accused you of having what Diane Sawyer had on election night.

Anyway…

While I’m far from perfecting them, here’s the recipe, and a few lessons learned! Continue Reading →

Stock Up :: Turkey Meatballs

turkey meatballs

I probably make 1000 of these each winter.  They’re really easy to make, and they freeze well.  It’s one of those recipes that you might as well make in big batches, because it doesn’t take that much more time or effort to double or triple the recipe.

This is one of the first recipes I posted on BigOven, and to date, it’s received rave reviews — and 343 “Favorite” clicks!  I know you’ll love them too. Continue Reading →

Better Late than NeverŠ

Julie Child autograph

You might say that the early 90‘s were a “bad patch” for me. Without going into mind-numbing detail (not because I have a book deal, simply because I want to protect the innocent) here’s the highlight reel: I had recently divorced, walked away with nothing but debt, been struck by a freak illness resulting in emergency surgery, my job was in jeopardy, and I was in love with a guy who was going through his own “bad patch.” Oh yeah, somewhere in there, my car was totaled when a distracted driver blew through a stop sign and hit me head-on. Not exactly “winning!” Continue Reading →

Sometimes, cheaters DO win…

Chipotle Cilantro Lime Rice

I love to cook, and I’ll tackle a difficult recipe without blinking. But for whatever reason, I can’t whip up a batch of rice worthy of company. I don’t own a rice cooker — though I’m told that if I did, my rice-failures would be behind me. But I don’t need or want another appliance — especially one so “specialized.” Anyway, I figure it would be “cheating.”

Then my sister introduced me to an alternative. Continue Reading →

It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas…

Cinnamon Twist Coffee Cakes

I don’t remember a Christmas morning without one of these Cinnamon Twist Coffee Cakes baking while we opened our gifts.  With two older brothers, it was pretty much devoured within minutes of coming out of the oven.  Several years ago, I started making these for a few neighborhood friends.  Since a recipe makes 4 cakes, I’d double it to ensure that Husband and I had 2 left for ourselves — one for Christmas morning, and one for New Year’s morning.
