- 3½ cups flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1½ tsp vanilla, separated
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 pounds confectioners sugar
- 3 Tbs butter, softened
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ½ cup milk
- Preheat oven to 370ยบ.
- Sift flour and next four ingredients {through nutmeg} together, and set aside.
- In large bowl, cream butter, sugar and brown sugar with fork or wooden spoon until smooth. Add eggs and 1 tsp of the vanilla and mix well.
- Mix in flour mixture alternatively with buttermilk, stirring after each addition. Don't over beat.
- Drop onto greased cookie sheets. Bake just until done, checking after 8 minutes.
- While cookies bake, Cream butter with remaining vanilla and about ½ cup of the powdered sugar. Continue adding powdered sugar, alternately with milk, until desired consistency. If frosting is too thin, add more powdered sugar. If too thick, add milk, 1 tsp at a time.
