Pea Soup {Do people really crochet underwear?}

pea soup

There I was, sitting in the sun on my deck, greeting golfers as they passed by on their way to the next hole.

When those I knew asked what I was up to, I simply said “shelling peas” – as if it were as commonplace as “watering my plants” or “walking the dog.”  I might as well have said “I am crocheting a new pair of underwear.” or “I am teaching myself morse code.” Most responded with that funny expression a dog makes when he hears something confusing and cocks his head to one side.

12 Things I Always Have in my Freezer {& Chicken Noodle Soup recipe}

homemade chicken noodle soup

A recent weekend found both Husband and me feeling a bit under the weather – coupled with a few of those gray days where the only thing that sounds good is a big blanket, a good book, and the occasional movie. And of course, Chicken Noodle Soup.

One of the many benefits of having a well-stocked – and well-organized, freezer {more on that soon!} is that you can pull together a healthy dinner quickly, without having to rely on pre-packaged foods that most likely aren’t as tasty or good-for-you as you can make yourself. And thanks to a little extra effort most every time I’m in the kitchen, I had everything I needed to make a great tasting soup, without bundling up and dragging myself to the store. Sweet Potato-Poblano Soup {spend a day with the nerds}

poblano soup

If you made a New Year Resolution this year {there’s a 55% chance you did} there’s a 1-in-3 chance that your resolve didn’t last past January. Often, that’s because the goals aren’t clear or measurable, or there’s no strategy for getting there. I have something that might help – even at the risk of you thinking me “nerdy.”  {I’ll get to the Sweet Potato-Poblano Soup in a sec’.} Continue Reading →

Barbecued Chicken Stew {…and a good idea gone bad}

barbecued chicken stew

I had bragged one too many times about my marathon cooking sessions, after which I’d have a totally stocked freezer, full of meals and side dishes to feed Husband and I for a month. My girlfriends loved the concept, but couldn’t see themselves doing it. So the idea for a meal-swap party was launched.

The plan was for each of us to make a single meal, in bulk. We’d make enough so that the other six friends would each receive a main dish that serves 4. All of us would have half a dozen new dishes to try – ready to freeze, reheat and serve.

Stock Up :: Game Day Posole

posole

I meant to post this earlier… but there was a power outage during the Superbowl. *

Anyhoo… I’m sure a disproportionate number of households prepared game-day feasts that included Velveeta, tortilla chips, wings, and any number of dips that aren’t exactly artery or waistline friendly.

At the Wood house, we’re about to launch a (modified) cleanse, and didn’t feel like taking ten steps backward before we’d even started.  So I pulled out one of my most tried-and-true dishes that is super easy and super healthy — perfect for this Superbowl Sunday. Continue Reading →

Let the cleanse begin!

We’ve put it off as long as we could… that post-holidays, post-vacation resolution to shock the system back to healthier habits.

Last year, Husband and I did the 2-week, Bon Appetit Food Lovers’ Cleanse.  It was great — a LOT of work, but we found some new favorite dishes, which we continue to make.  We were never hungry – much to our surprise.

This year, we’re trying the Whole Living Action Plan, a 3-week program that detoxes your organs, by eliminating all the naughty stuff (dang!) and starting with a simple base of lentils, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds.  If we survive that, we get to add in fish and gluten-free grains.

Let me say right up front, there WILL be some modifications to this plan… Continue Reading →
