It’s no secret that I’d rather spend hours in a kitchen store than five minutes in a jewelry store. {Lucky for my husband – he gets to reap the benefits AND it’s so much cheaper… in the long run!} I used to be a bit of a kitchen-gadget addict, but our remodel gave me the opportunity to purge anything that good knife skills could replicate. Now, several of my favorite kitchen tools don’t take up any drawer space at all – they’re all on my iPhone. Apped’oeuvre Place-Cards {Entertaining Tip}

One of my favorite kinds of gatherings to throw is a cocktail party.  I like being able to serve a bunch of different apped’oeuvres, and not be tied to the timing and formality of a sit-down dinner.  (Yes, I know “apped’oeuvre” is not a real word.  But I want it to be…)

Since I usually mix up tried-and-true recipes with some “experiments,” I want to let guests know what they’re eating.  So I make place-cards to identify what is on each tray.  You might have noticed one of these in a recent post.

I didn’t want to love them…

This is Sally constructing some sliders as I post this!

Let me start out with a disclaimer: I’m pro healthy-eating. I’m anti white-bread. I don’t eat processed cheese, and I don’t like pickles. However, every once in awhile, it’s ok to “fall off the wagon” (food-wise) in the name of hunger. Or friendship. Moderation in everything, right?

So my dear friend Sally is truly a character. I love her dearly.  While she’s one of the funniest and most generous people I know, her kitchen skills have mostly centered around Tater-Tot Hot Dish (it’s a Minnesota thing) and other dishes that rely heavily on butter and cheese. Sometimes, cheaters DO win…

Chipotle Cilantro Lime Rice

I love to cook, and I’ll tackle a difficult recipe without blinking. But for whatever reason, I can’t whip up a batch of rice worthy of company. I don’t own a rice cooker — though I’m told that if I did, my rice-failures would be behind me. But I don’t need or want another appliance — especially one so “specialized.” Anyway, I figure it would be “cheating.”
